Why He Is Called Banaras Ke Gopal Bhaiya

The name Banaras Ke Gopal Bhaiya carries both reverence and closeness. Gopal is a beloved name of Krishna; Bhaiya means elder brother. Together, the words describe a relationship in which the deity is welcomed as a living member of the family.

A name born at home

After Srimati Shanti Bala Devi received Laddu Gopal Ji from her Guru, she cared for Him as her child. Her daughters and sons accepted Him as the eldest among them. In the language of the household, He naturally became Banaras Ke Gopal Bhaiya.

The name was not created as a title or slogan. It grew from the way the family lived with the deity each day.

Closeness without losing reverence

Calling the Divine brother does not make worship casual. It makes responsibility personal. A family member is remembered, fed, welcomed, and cared for. This is the emotional heart of the temple’s tradition in Kashi.
